The Internet is generally used for about 15 years. At that time it has developed an information highway to an Imaginarium cyberspace for all thoughts, products, services and information. One of the largest areas of the Internet is communication. With the advent of micro-blogging sites like Twitter, it must be concise and to the point quickly.
In the western world, where people mostly speak and read English, the Internet is no exception. Writing in perfect English and people will understand. Yet the Internet developed a language all its own. Abbreviations are the new king of the language, and initialized words like LOL (laugh out loud) suddenly become the norm. A good example is a popular site with photos of cute kittens in different situations with captions.
But, do people still react to longhand English?
In short, yes they do. A professional writer, even when writing for a teenage audience will endeavor to capture the nuances of English is maintained. Simply put, we still speak English and it is still taught in our schools. The advantages of having written copy in plain English:
– Your company looks professional. People will be expelled if they see improper grammar or spelling, even if that's how they speak or write.
– You're understood. Although LOL, ROFL etc are widely used, there are people who do not know what they mean. Usually these are older people or people who use the Internet for other purposes.
– Meanings are universally understood. With words as "losses" and "loose", although many people think that they are interchangeable, when the word is written in an article or sales letter, the meaning is always clear and universally understood.
– You are treating your customers / clients as intelligent beings, not illiterate twits.
I think subconsciously, people know the correct spelling and grammar ways things should be written, even if they themselves do not follow the rules. Many are just lazy or ignorant. Each copy that you approve for your business should not be this error. There is no need to dumb to your audience.
